The Pit

You told me about the pit
You told me how it gives you comfort
You told me it has always been around.

That place you call home,
It sounded intriguing
I wanted to know more

That pit of yours,
I asked you to show it to me
I wanted to get inside.

You lifted the cover for me
I saw how it draws people in
So I allowed.

Now that I’m in here
I wonder if I should have shouted,
If I should have brought in the rope.

Now that I’m in here
I know that a pit is a place to visit,
Never a place to stay in.
